An Exhibition at UNESCO

If you wonder what kind of work I did in Paris, here's a little peek. Not much, compared to what I normally do in Indonesia,.. but this, for me, is a big achievement. Although I had to collect the material my self, taking pictures, editing, doing the lay out and designing the catalogue and all the graphic designs, setting up the expo until dismantling it. All that sleepless nights and many more. But it pays off eventually. And the exhibition took place where Picasso's mural painting is the background! A little exhibition of Indonesia in the heart of Paris, who would dream of making it.

I have to thank my two besties ladies who happen to be my class mates back in the university. None of this would happen without them. Thanks Mbeb & Inoy. It was tremendous chance, and thanks big time for the help and the opportunity. You're awesome in your peculiar way. Kisses and hugs!

EDBE on Ikat

So EDBE is quite famous for its psychedelic batik; crazy pattern and cutting. But wait till you see its latest collection! EDBE, the labour of love between Eddy Betty and Ms. Ley Sandjaja has grown more mature design in a good sense. I personally love the last sequence where the model wore one long feather on the forehead ( simple and brilliant! designed by the famous accessories designer Rinaldy A Yunardi ) and the color of the collection was dark in natural tones. It's like a tribal chic, a threesome between Yohji, Comme de Garçon and Dries! It's very wearable yet keeping the insanity inside. Now I wrotre like I'm a fashion expert, LOL.

Anyway, If you love edginess, but love ethnic as much, I strongly recommended that you'd have such adorable items like these pieces from EDBE.

The Klungkung Market II

Not expecting much to see at first, but visiting Klungkung Market  this time taught me a little more about things.

 So I went to this  little shop in the corner, filled with assortment of fabrics; hand-woven and beautiful. There is Kain endek, Kain songket, and one new thing I've never heard before. Kain Bebali. I did a little research, and it turns out that kain bebali means all sort of textile that is made and used for ceremonial purposes. Kain means cloth, and bebali means ceremony. 

There I saw this pile of rich red fabric, woven with old indian patterns, and that is one example of kain bebali,  called Kain Cepuk. Made especially in Nusa Penida area, this kind of textile is used for the Panca Yadnya rituals, ( which includes the ceremonies to celebrate the circle of life - from the pregnancy till cremation ). Beautiful in all aspects:  in color, in pattern, and in meaning.

Delightful Delicate

Went to an exhibition and saw these two ladies, deeply concentrated working, in a high pace over a complicated work of threads. They said it;s a craft from Koto Gadang, West Sumatra. The call it Sulam Kapalo Peniti ( pin head embroidery ) and Renda Bangku ( stool lace ).  Quite funny when you hear it, no? But when you see it,  you can do nothing but hold your breath. Two old ladies can produce such beautiful and intricate work.

I tried to search the story behind sulam kapalo peniti and renda bangku, but I can't find much. Perhaps you could help.
